Aussie Cops Film Extra-Terrestrial Sparkle Over Gold Coast Sky

This is the moment Australian cops film an “extra-terrestrial sparkle” shooting across a Queensland cityscape on Monday night.

The meteorite was filmed zipping across the sky above Glitter Strip on the Gold Coast in the Australian state of Queensland, and the footage was shared on Facebook by the local police.

The Queensland Police Service accompanied the clip with the message: “All that glitters… Did you catch the extra-terrestrial sparkle over the glitter strip last night? Our Rapid Action Patrol officers did.”

Officers patrolling the area noticed a bright light plummeting to the ground and illuminating the night sky for a moment before breaking up.

The “extra-terrestrial sparkle” is believed to have been caused by a meteor in space, and coincides with the time of year when the April Lyrids meteor shower is visible in the Australian sky.

The Lyrids are among the oldest observed meteor showers and will take place this year between 14th and 30th April with a peak during the early hours of 23rd April.

According to EarthSky, the Lyrids meteor shower was first sighted in ancient China in 687 BC.

Many Australians travel out to the ‘bush’ where there is limited light pollution and the best clear skies for viewing the spectacle, which often sees up to 18 meteors falling per hour.

The radiant of the meteor shower is located in the constellation Lyra, near its brightest star Vega. Lyrid meteors are created by the comet C/1861 G1 (Thatcher).

Every year, particles streak through the sky from Thatcher’s dusty tail and usually disintegrate before landing on Earth.

Facebook user ‘Kallee Niksic’ commented: “Lyrid meteor shower. I saw this last night. Tonight will be the best apparently.”

Netizen ‘Krystiana Dubos’ said: “I saw something that looked very similar last Wednesday out near Strathpine/ Bracken Ridge while I was driving home from work. I was on the highway.”

‘Matthew Kunde’ joked: “Get those aliens into 2 weeks of hotel quarantine!”
