A biker travelled for over five miles with a sharp beaked jacamar bird stuck in his neck before passing out and being saved by first-aiders.

The bird died and the young man also almost died after the shocking accident which took place on a road in a rural part of the Brazilian municipality of Barra do Bugres on 24th April.

The injured biker who is from the Umutina indigenous ethnic group hit the jacamar as he was riding home from work on his motorbike and its beak lodged in his neck.

Eik Junior Monzilar Parikokoriu, 23, had to travel for nine kilometres (5.6 mi) with the bird stuck in his neck until he reached his village.

Upon arriving, the pain caused him to pass out and his family rushed over to administer first aid, then taking him to the village primary care unit, where the bird was removed from his neck.

Nurse technician Elizete Ariabo Calomezore said she had never before come across a case like this, telling news site G1: “He pulled the bird and started bleeding from his neck and nose.

“I cleaned him up and called the doctor, who told me what to do. I followed his instructions and sent him, along with the bird, to the on-call doctor in Barra do Bugres to check him up.”

Parikokoriu was then taken by ambulance to A&E in Barra do Bugres, where he received further care.

According to local biologist Vitor Piacentini, the bird that lodged itself in Parikokoriu’s neck was a brown jacamar (Brachygalba lugubris).

It sadly died and Parikokoriu said he will keep its carcass to remind himself of his close call, while reminding fellow bikers to always ride with appropriate safety gear and to “value life”.
