Brave Nurse Rescues Baby Born In Toilet And Removes Faeces From Its Airways

A baby that almost died when it got stuck in the pipe after his mother accidentally gave birth while on the toilet was saved because a neighbour was an emergency doctor.

The panicked woman said she had almost passed out with shock when she realised she had just given birth to her baby while using the toilet at the family home sub-provincial city of Shenzhen, in the central coast of the southern Chinese province of Guangdong.

Local media said the woman was horrified when she felt the baby still attached to the umbilical cord drop into the toilet and screamed for help from her mother-in-law.

In a panic, the woman rushed to a neighbour who was a Chinese medicine doctor, who by chance had emergency doctor friend Li Huayan visiting.

The woman who has 16 years experience as emergency doctor put the hand into the toilet bowl and removed the little body which already swallowed some of the contents of the toilet bowl and whose windpipe was blocked with faeces.

She said that her emergency training had kicked in and she had then fished out the faeces with her bare hands and cleaned the respiratory tract before massaging its back to encourage breathing.

The rescue worker described her relief as the baby suddenly started crying and she realised it was going to be okay, as she then wrapped it in blankets to keep it warm.

She has been in charge of nurses in the Department of Anaesthesiology and Surgery, Shenzhen University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Guangming) for nine years and had a lot of experience with obstetrics and gynaecology operations and neonatal operations which kicked in when she was suddenly confronted with the almost disaster.

Mother and baby were then taken to the Shenzhen Hospital of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Guangming) where both were given a clean bill of health and later released.

She told local media: “When the newborn arrived the head was so small I was worried that it could be completely lost down the toilet.”

She said after rescue she had been praying that the little one was okay and was kept informed by the family, but rejected any suggestion that she had done anything special.

She said: “Actually, I just did what I should do most under the circumstances.”

But a track record indicates that she is a cut above the average, and is known at the hospital where she works as “Sister Yan” where she was also frequently honoured in her work.

In 2016, she was awarded the honorary title of “Shenzhen Excellent Nurse”; in 2017, she was awarded the “Guangming District” Excellent nurse”; in 2020, she was awarded the “anti-epidemic angel” in Guangming District.
