Broken Down Lift Opened At Hospital For First Time In 24 Years Reveals Skeleton
A human skeleton has been found at the bottom of a disused lift at a hospital in India that had not been opened for 24 years.
The incident took place at the OPEC Hospital in the Kaili of Basti district in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh when repair work was being carried out on the lift on 1st September.
The identity of the dead person found in the lift is currently unknown and the authorities have sent DNA taken from the skeleton to a laboratory to be tested.
The police are looking through missing persons reports from 24 years ago, according to local media outlet India Today, in a bid to identify the remains.
Construction work on the hospital began back in 1991 and the lift was operational until 1997 when it broke down, according to the police.
Since then, it has not been in use but now 24 years later, it was decided that it was about time that it was repaired.
But when workers opened the lift up and had a look beneath it, they were in for a nasty surprise because that is where they found a human skeleton.
It is currently unclear how the person died and why their corpse was in the lift in the first place.
Police spokesperson Deependra Nath Choudhary is quoted by India Today as saying: “If any written complaint is given in the matter, we will register a case. At present, the police are investigating several angles. To solve the mystery of the male skeleton, 24 police stations in the district have been deployed.”
The investigation is ongoing.
