Brothers Kept Divorced Sister Chained In Dark Room For Year In Pakistan When She Demanded Alimony From Ex Hubby

This is the moment Pakistani police rescue a woman who had been chained in a dark room for a year by her four brothers after she refused to give up a claim for alimony against her ex-husband.

The divorced woman, who was imprisoned in a dark room without electricity and was also reportedly tortured by them, was rescued by the police on Tuesday.

She was allegedly kept like this for the last year by her brothers in a village in the district of Swabi in the Pakistani province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Police spokesperson Mohammad Shoaib said they received a tip-off about the woman’s situation before they carried out the raid.

Officers then found the woman chained and isolated and they freed her.

Shoaib said the woman is around 33 years old, has two children, and was divorced from her husband in 2016.

According to the police, the woman’s divorce displeased her brothers and they grew angrier still when she wanted to take her ex-husband to court for alimony for the children.

Shoaib said they were also against her wanting to find a job.

As the woman refused to back down on her decision to take legal action against her ex, the brothers decided to keep her under lock and key, and even tortured her regularly, according to Shoaib.

The police added the brothers also threatened to kill their sister.

The police said they have arrested three brothers while the fourth remains on the run and the investigation continues.

The release of the woman from her ordeal follows on from the recent story of the 27-year-old daughter of a former Pakistani ambassador who was beheaded and shot by an acquaintance.

The two shocking cases have highlighted the growing problem of violence against women in Pakistan, and they are not isolated incidents, but they have triggered debate about the country’s failure to protect its women and deny them independence – and to kill or torture them when they refuse.

Pakistan is the sixth most dangerous place in the world for women to live, with sexual crimes and domestic violence increasing rather than decreasing, with many blaming Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan for encouraging violence against women.

He was even recorded appearing to blame women when they are sexually abused.

Mahnaz Rehman, a Lahore-based feminist told German broadcaster DW that women are told to do what men tell them, and grew up with an understanding that men have a superior status in the family.

Former Pakistani politician Yasmin Lehri agreed saying: “A man who stabbed a young female lawyer more than 12 times was recently released by the court. What message does it send to the perpetrators of violence against women?”
