Chinese Student Swallows Bottle Top While Swigging Beer With Pals

A Chinese university graduate has swallowed a beer bottle top while celebrating getting good grades with classmates.

The student, name not disclosed, was enjoying dinner with classmates in the city of Xi’an in the landlocked Chinese province of Shaanxi when he used a bottle opener to open a beer.

However, the young man failed to realise that the metal cap was still sitting on the rim of the bottle when he went to take a swig, and he ended up swallowing it.

The sharp, wavy object ended up in the student’s oesophagus and was at risk of causing internal damage or haemorrhaging.

The student was taken to hospital where a doctor examined him and then used a gastroscope to retrieve the metal object.

Fortunately for the young man, he was allowed to leave hospital later that same night.

According to Doctor Wang Fang, a gastroenterologist at the Xi’an Hospital No 3, since the Dragon Boat Festival in China, their department has admitted many patients who swallowed magnetic beads and other foreign objects, although an entire beer bottle top was a first.

The doctor reminded everyone to chew slowly during meals and if someone accidentally swallows a foreign object, do not try to bring it up or wait for it to pass out normally, and instead visit a medical centre as soon as possible.
