This is the moment Argentine cops find around 100 poor parrots suffering in the boot of a car in high temperatures.

The blue-fronted parrots (Amazona aestiva xanthopteryx) were found during a police stop on Route 95 near the city of Villa Angela in the northern Argentine province of Chaco on 12th January.

After being pulled over by the cops, the vehicle’s two occupants told officers that they were heading from the city of Presidencia Roque Saenz Pena in Chaco Province to the city of Tostado in the neighbouring province of Santa Fe.

During a search of the Citroen C4, the police found 100 parrots, presumably being kept in the car boot to sell on at a later time, in poor condition and suffering in high temperatures.

The two Citroen C4 occupants, names not reported but described as two elderly men, were arrested.

The public prosecutor’s office in the city of Presidencia Roque Saenz Pena is investigating the two men for animal abuse.

Meanwhile, the 100 rescued birds, known locally as the ‘Chaco talking parrot’, were taken to the municipal zoo to undergo checks and treatment before being released back into their natural habitat.

The investigation into the two elderly men continues.

The blue-fronted parrot, also called the Chaco talking parrot, yellow-winged amazon, or Argentine amazon, is a subspecies of parrot found in eastern Bolivia, adjacent parts of Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina.

It is commonly kept in captivity as a pet or companion parrot.

It is categorised as a species of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
