Devout Christian Sues McDonalds For A Symbolic GBP 10 For Making Her Break Lent

A devout Christian is reportedly suing McDonald’s for a symbolic GBP 10 for promoting meaty treats that made her break her Lent fasting.

Russian Orthodox devotee Ksenia Ovchinnikova filed a lawsuit against McDonald’s for their promotion of meat products in the city of Omsk during Lent in April 2019.

While walking through the city centre, Ovchinnikova said she saw a McDonald’s promotion for cheeseburgers and McNuggets.

After not eating any meat for around a month, she said she succumbed to the draw of the promo and promptly devoured a cheeseburger, later regretting it.

According to local media, Ovchinnikova has since decided to seek compensation from McDonald’s for RUB 1,000 (GBP 10) for making her break Lent.

Her statement claims: “At this point, the promotion had been running for about a month. After I saw the ad, I couldn’t help myself, I visited McDonald’s and bought a cheeseburger.

“I see a violation of the law on consumer protection. I have asked the court to investigate and, if a violation has taken place, to force McDonald’s to compensate me for moral damages amounting to RUB 1,000.”

Before the promotion, Ovchinnikova claimed she had successfully fasted over Lent for 16 years before the McDonalds’ ad had tempter her from the path.

According to reports, the woman’s legal procedure has hit a technical snag and the claimant has to redraft her complaint to move the case forwards.

A spokesperson for the Moscow Patriarchate meanwhile has urged the woman to “go to confession instead of court” over the incident.
