Exploding Meteor Lights Up Night Sky Above Southern Florida And The Bahamas

Karen Epstein/Newsflash

This is the moment a meteor fireball explodes and lights up the night sky which was seen from the Bahamas to southern Florida.

The amazing footage was captured over the sky of the south of the American state of Florida but was reportedly also spotted in the Bahamas at around 10 pm on Monday 12th April.

The videos show different angles of the moment the meteor burns in the Earth’s atmosphere first appearing as a small streak of light before turning into a fireball that lights up the entire sky.

Fireball is the term used for meteors that emit large amounts of light as they streak across the sky.

Experts believe the meteor was travelling northbound between the western tip of Grand Bahama Island and southern Florida and was seen among hundreds of locals.

The object was presumably of large dimensions which allowed it to enter deeper into the Earth’s atmosphere before exploding in mid-air from the heat and friction upon its entry.

Though meteors falling to Earth is not too uncommon, this incident was different because it was seen by a large number of people as it burnt for a long time and travelled a long distance.

In a conversation with the news broadcast WPLG Local 10 South Florida Amateur Astronomy Association Vice President Jason Matter said that though the likeliest theory is that it was a meteor, its origin is still not clear. (https://bit.ly/3shZ0IO)

He said: “These happen all of the time around the world, so [a] formal investigation may never happen.” Adding: “We may never fully know what this is.”
