Fisherman Cuts Plastic Ring To Save Baby Shark

A Turkish fisherman has rescued this poor baby shark with a plastic ring wrapped around its nose after finding it in his net.

Local fisherman Atakan Yaman, 21, found the baby shark off the coast of the town of Mugada in the north-western Turkish city of Bartin on 21st March.

Yaman told local media that he threw his net in the sea and found the shark pup when he pulled it onto his boat.

The baby houndshark was found with a plastic band wrapped tightly around its nose and Yaman reached for his toolbox to free the pup.

The fisherman said he believes the object was a plastic rung found under the caps of plastic bottles.

He suspected that it had been on the shark’s nose for a long time and took photos showing the pup before and after the object was removed.

Yaman then released the shark back to the sea.

According to local media, Yaman said that plastics in the ocean are harmful to marine life and asked residents to be more considerate when using beaches or travelling on the sea.

Houndshark is a type of shark from the Triakidae family, which has about 40 species, and are known for being shy.

There are 13 types of Houndshark and 35 types of other shark species living in Turkish waters.
