Man Stunned To Wake Up From COVID Intubation With Gaping Wound In Head That Doctors Cannot Explain

A COVID-19 patient who was intubated in hospital was shocked when he woke up with a huge gaping wound in his head that neither he nor doctors can explain.

The unnamed 44-year-old man from the Brazilian capital, Brasilia, woke up in hospital after a month-long battle against COVID-19 with a deep, gaping cut to his head.

The man filed a complaint with the police after finding the cut after spending 26 days in different hospitals in and around the Brazilian capital, with nobody able to explain how he got the injury, which was not present when he was first admitted.

The man, who works as a concierge, was first admitted to hospital with complications due to COVID-19 on 3rd July. Due to the severity of his condition, he was immediately transferred to another hospital.

He said: “I stayed at HRAN (Asa Norte Regional Hospital) for three days, where I arrived without a cut on my head. On 5th July, I had to be intubated because I was short of breath and my lung was very compromised.”

After he was sedated, he was again transferred to another hospital. He said: “My wife commented that when I arrived at Daher (Hospital), I already had this cut on my head. Even so, I spent six days in the ICU.

“On 10th July, I was extubated, and when I woke up, the doctor asked me about the cut on my head. I couldn’t explain why I arrived at HRAN without the cut and they didn’t report the cut on my head to my wife.”

The patient spent 10 days at Daher Hospital before being transferred to a public hospital when a bed became available on 22nd July. He was discharged four days later.

He said: “Since then, I’ve been struggling with this cut, which won’t heal and nobody can say what caused it. I hope the police manage to come up with that answer.

“I’ve had to go to work wearing a cap because all the time, someone would come through the lobby and ask what had happened to my head. This makes me extremely embarrassed. It gives the impression they tried to do an unsuccessful lobotomy.”

The local Health Department has since said that the cut could not have been caused at a public hospital. The investigation continues.
