A Chinese man who took an abandoned sofa home after finding it on the side of the road was left stunned when he found a gold nugget and wad of cash down the back.

The incident took place in the city of Qingdao in the Chinese province of Shandong on 1st May, Labour Day in China.

According to the news site Oriental Daily, the man happened across the sofa by the side of the road after it had been left exposed to the elements for several days.

The man, who owns a local business, said he felt that the wood used for the sofa would still useful and decided to take it home.

He took the sofa apart with tools and a small, hand-woven bag dropped out that contained a large wad of cash, a gold nugget, and several deposit slips.

The man immediately called his brother and together they decided to track down the owner of the items.

He explained: “It’s not ours, we can’t take it.”

The brother said that they have approached local media companies to help track down the owner of the small bag of goodies to return it to them.
