Moment Special Forces Shoot Rubber Bullets At Rioting Inmates In Argie Prison
This is the moment Special Forces agents shoot rubber bullets at convicts who rioted and burned mattresses over overcrowding concerns in the Argentine prison.
The incident was filmed at Coronda prison in the Argentine province of Santa Fe on Wednesday.
The riot broke out in the evangelist pavilion after 6pm when approximately 20 inmates set fire to mattresses and tried to force their way onto the courtyard.
According to the news site Clarin, the prisoners were angry over overcrowding issues, claiming that 200 inmates were in a cell block meant for 100 people and that two or three were sleeping in a one-person cell.
Prison guards and Special Force teams on the scene were able to control the situation and prevent inmates from gaining access to the courtyard and other areas in the infamous prison.
The news site Diario Uno said there were several minutes of tension when mattresses were burned and agents fired rubber bullets at rioting inmates to restore calm.
Order was promptly restored and all fires in the cell block were extinguished without injury to convicts or agents.
Representatives for the rioting inmates voluntarily promised to restore calm and agreed to meet with prison bosses to discuss improvements to their living conditions.
Meanwhile, the Santa Fe authorities said that Coronda prison has a capacity for 1,456 inmates and that there is currently an excess of around 20 percent with 1,777 being held there.
