Officials In Volcanic Iceland Approve Magma As A Name For Girls And Bond For Boys

The Icelandic Naming Committee that decides what names can legally be used for people has approved the name ‘Magma’ for girls as Fagradalsfjall volcano spews lava in the country’s south, and the name Bond like the secret agent for boys.

The Icelandic Naming Committee, also known as the Personal Names Committee, keeps an official register of approved first names as well as governing the introduction of new names into local culture.

While Fagradalsfjall volcano spews lava in the country’s south-west, the committee decided to allow Kvika, meaning ‘Magma’ among other things, for baby girls.

The committee also allowed the use of Apollo and Bond for boys after subsiding heroic characters such as the 007 secret agent should be allowed, however, they turned down Gunnarsson as a first name because it is already widely used in the country as a surname.

The naming committee also approved May for girls, considering it a genitive form of the name Mayar as five women in the official register already have the name, the eldest being 71 years old.
