Smoke Fills World Trade Center Subway Station In New York As Commuters Evacuate

This footage shows how smoke filled the Fulton Street subway station in Lower Manhattan near the World Trade Center, forcing people to evacuate.

The New York Fire Department (FDNY) said the incident occurred at around 7.20pm on Monday, 14th February.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) is investigating the cause of the incident amid unconfirmed reports from passengers that a train had caught fire.

A netizen going by the handle ‘raxsha’ said on Twitter: “Guys our 6 @MTA train at WTC just caught on fire…”

Some passengers said it took some time for the train doors to open once they had reached the stop, with others saying there was a rush to evacuate the smoke-filled train and station.

Footage of the incident shows people walking away from a thick cloud of smoke filling up the station. Some can be seen climbing the stairs to street level, while others can be seen taking other exits.

It is currently unclear what caused the incident and the authorities are investigating.

The Fulton Street subway stop is near the One World Trade Center, the rebuilt World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan that was destroyed in the terrorist attacks on 11th September 2001.
