Spearfish Hunting Lunch Ends Up Being Eaten Itself And Destroys Its Spear After Crashing Into Harbour Wall
A hungry spearfish chasing a school of smaller fishes ended up on the dinner plate itself after knocking itself out by crashing into a harbour wall.
The hilarious footage that ended so unfortunately for the spearfish which also broke its spear in the process was filmed in the harbour of the Adriatic port city of Split in Croatia.
A group of people at the local fish market grabbed their mobile phones to film the spearfish chasing the school of smaller fish around the harbour, leaping in and out of the water as it does so.
But in its eagerness to catch a meal, it swam through the school of smaller fish and then collided with full force against the wall, making the people on the harbour wall start to laugh.
They then go over and find the unfortunate spearfish with its blunted spear either unconscious or dead and drag it out of the water for a fish supper.
The footage was shared on the Facebook page @RibarnicaPeskarija of the local fish market ‘Gastro ribarnice Brac’ who said: “This morning, behind our fish shop ‘Poljud’, in front of the Croatian Rowing Club ‘Sailor’, a really unusual sea accident occurred.
“The larger fish was having some sport chasing smaller fish, but unfortunately ended up getting too close to the harbour wall.
“At the end of the day it was a little bit too eager to get lunch, and misjudged the distance.”
The ‘Gastro ribarnice Brac’ spokesman said they had grabbed the mobile phone and started filming because of the nice way the larger fish was jumping in and out of the water.
They said: “Nothing similar has ever been seen at this location before.”
The video gained a lot of comments such as online commentator ‘Sejad Kajtazovic’ who wrote: “This is classic suicide.”
Facebook user ‘Tino Barisic’ posted a comment: “Look at this! This is crazy”.
‘Kresimir Biskupovic’ remarked on the video: “Lunch fell from the clear sky.”
The spearfish Latin name is ‘Tetrapturus belone’, fish from the family ‘Istiophoridae’ and also the only one from that family that has been found in the Adriatic so far.
It is a pelagic fish, it lives closer to the surface, and has a large, long fin over the entire back, slender body and jaw elongated in the beak, or needle.
