Texas Governor Hopeful Outraged After Wife Arrested For Drink Driving
This is the moment the wife of Texas governor hopeful Allen West is arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, prompting the Republican candidate to demand an apology for the cop’s “insidious” actions as his wife only drank “water and lemonade”.
At the moment it is unconfirmed whether she was under the influence of drink or drugs as she did not use the breathalyser correctly and the results of a blood test have not yet been made available.
But in the face of West’s criticism of the arrest, the Dallas police chief has come out in support of the officer who detained Angela West on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI).
The police released footage of the arrest, which took place in Dallas in the US state of Texas on the evening of 20th August, on Monday.
Police chief Eddie Garcia said he released the footage to defend the under-fire officer.
Texas governor candidate Allen West, 60, called the arrest “crap” and “insidious”, producing a restaurant receipt to prove that his wife only drank “water and lemonade” at dinner.
He was also outraged that his grandson was in the car at the time and was left on the street in the company of two officers while his grandmother was taken to a police cell.
The Republican politician posted a video calling for the arresting officer to be sacked while also demanding an apology from the mayor, district attorney, and the police chief.
In the video, he said “this is crap” and that he proudly supports “the thin blue line, but this is insidious”.
In response, Garcia said in a press conference on Monday: “No police chief can sit idly by while his officers get falsely vilified.
“I saw a professional officer. I saw a courteous officer. Regardless of what the lab results show, I believe that she believed that there was probable cause to think that something was impacting her driving.”
Angela carried out a sobriety test in the police footage where she did not appear to stumble while a breathalyser test proved “inconclusive”, and will not be used as evidence against her, because she did not blow correctly, according to the police.
Defence attorney Todd Shapiro said: “I anticipate whenever the chemical tests do come back on this test that you’re going to see, the world’s going to see that she had no substances within her system.
“There was no alcohol. There was no drugs listed or otherwise. And I do believe these charges will be dropped.”
She was taken to a local hospital for a blood test, the results of which have yet to come back from the lab.
The investigation continues.
The Texas gubernatorial election will take place in November 2022.
