This is the moment the top of a mosque’s minaret breaks off and drops down onto a house below due to strong winds.

The storm that affected the whole country in the past days almost caused a disaster in the Turkish province of Konya.

According to the local media, the incident took place in the village of Katranli in the district of Ermenek in the morning hours of 10th April.

The moments of the incident were recorded by the villagers on mobile phones. In the images, it is seen that the minaret of a mosque is tilted sideways in the village, where strong winds are effective, and it breaks off while the villagers cry out.

The video ends with the minaret’s iron end falling on the roof of a house below the mosque.

Local news outlet Yeni Cag Gazetesi reported that only minor damages occurred in the mosque and the house where the minaret’s end fell. No loss of life was reported.

After the images were shared on social media, some netizens wrote that the mosque was not built with quality materials, while others suggested that the minaret’s height was too high.

During Prophet Muhammad’s time, the minarets were built high so that the prayer recited by going up to the minaret could be heard from further distances to invite Muslims to worship.

Even though today, the call to prayer is being made inside the mosque using a megaphone instead of going up to the minaret, minarets in Turkey are still built high in the customary manner.

However, due to these and similar events recently, the Directorate of Religious Affairs has been working on shortening the minarets’ height in many mosques.
