Week Old Baby Penguin Born At English Zoo Is Fed By One Of Its Parents

This is the moment a rare penguin feeds its recently hatched chick at an English zoo a week ago.

The footage was shared by the Marwell Zoo which is based in Colden Common in Hampshire.

The video shows the adorable baby Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti) waking one of its parents.

The hungry chick is then seen being fed by its parent who regurgitates food for the baby penguin as the video ends.

The touching video was captioned: “We’re excited to announce that a Humboldt penguin chick has hatched!

“Keepers say the one-week-old youngster is growing well and is very responsive. Parents Echo and Lilly are both involved in rearing the chick, who will not leave the nest for around eight weeks.” (sic)

The zoo released a statement saying Echo and Lilly are some of the oldest penguins of their colony and are experienced parents.

The zoo’s Bird’s Keeper Christopher Kent said they don’t know the sex of the chick yet as they are very “hands-off” when it comes to raising chicks “and only intervene where absolutely necessary”.

He added: “Both parents will take turns to incubate the eggs for around 40 days and care for their young once hatched. The chick is fed regurgitated fish by its parents as you can see in the footage.” (sic)

According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species Humboldt penguins are considered vulnerable.

They are found along the Pacific coast of South America in Chile and Peru with 80 percent of the entire population living in protected areas in northern Chile.
