Wife Of Trans Man With Female Body Sent To Male Prison Fears For His Life After Contact Stops

The wife of a trans man sent to a tough male prison in Russia despite still being biologically female has claimed that she has stopped hearing from him and fears for his wellbeing.

Elena Gulevich, wife of convicted trans man Nazar Gulevich, 38, formerly called Anastasia, said her husband was suddenly moved to an isolation ward and she has not heard a word from him since.

She told the news site Life: “I don’t know anything about where he is or what condition he is in right now.”

Elena vowed to write to the prison authorities to complain about being kept out of the loop, adding that she fears for his life in the men’s prison.

However, the prison body said that the inmate has been checked and found to be okay.

Life reported that a quarantine measure was taken at the prison until 15th May and all the visits were canceled since the declaration of the quarantine. It is not clear whether his wife will be able to visit Nazar after the quarantine.

Russian prison authorities sparked outrage when they sent Nazar to the male prison last month, raising concerns about his safety as he is physiologically still a woman.

Nazar Gulevich, 38, is a transgender man, formerly called Anastasia, who was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for fraud.

Nazar was born with female reproductive organs but felt like a man all his life and underwent hormone therapy, changed his name and planned to have a transition surgery.

However, before he was able to undergo surgery, Nazar was detained on criminal fraud charges and spent almost two years in a pre-trial detention centre for women.

However, now the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) has insisted on his transfer to a male colony for the remaining three months of his sentence in the city of Vladimir located in the western Russian region Vladimir Oblast.

According to the news site Life, the deputy chairman of the Moscow Public Monitoring Commission, Eva Merkacheva, said the news came as a shock to Nazar and his family, and he even tried to commit suicide afterwards.

Merkacheva said: “According to his passport, he is a man; he changed a long time ago. But according to his physiology, he is still a woman.

“When the question arose where to send him, they said that he should be sent to a male colony according to his passport. Well, can you imagine that a woman will end up in a male colony? In what position he will find himself there, and what will happen to him next?”

Merkacheva explained that Nazar has been sent to the Vladimir region where the most severe and harsh colonies are located.

Merkacheva added: “They can hope that he will be safe, but in fact, the worst can happen. And even if they guarantee him complete safety, they cannot guarantee him a safe mental state. As a result, he will make more attempts.”
