This is the moment a massive pool roof collapses right on top of swimming kids after the building was hit by lightning during heavy rain in Istanbul.
There were luckily no deaths but two injured children were taken to hospital, according to local media, after one child suffered a fractured skull and the other was fished out of the pool unconscious after having spent some time underwater.
The incident took place at the Acarkent Coliseum gym in the Beykoz district of Turkey’s largest city Istanbul, on Tuesday, 16th August.
The footage shows the moment the roof collapses on top of the kids. One of the injured children is just 10 years old.
One of the parents of one of the two injured children, named only as O. O. in local media reports, said: “In the flood disaster that happened yesterday, the roof over the swimming pool of the gym in Acarkent Coliseum collapsed as a result of a lightning strike, and my daughter was caught under the collapsed roof with a friend of hers and was taken out of the water unconscious after being under the water for a while.
“The other child unfortunately, he was taken to surgery for a fracture caused by a blow to his head. Thank goodness, they’re both fine now.”
The sports hall issued a statement saying: “Dear members and visitors; With the heavy rain today, lightning struck the Coliseum building despite the lightning rod. A part of the roof of the indoor pool collapsed due to the effect of the lightning hitting the roof.
“There was no loss of life as a result of this natural disaster we experienced. It is our only consolation. Our club will continue to serve as of Tuesday, 16th August. Our indoor pool will be closed for the renovation period that has not yet been determined.”
