Cops in Brazil have arrested a trans woman for drugging her friend to death because she was jealous that he would be more beautiful than her after he transitioned.
Civil Police arrested singer and makeup artist Maryana Elisa Rimes Paulo, 49, in Sao Bernardo do Campo, Sao Paulo state, south-eastern Brazil on 29th August.
Investigators believe she spent more than a year using her friend Marcelo do Lago Limeira’s identity and defrauded him out of BRL 1 million (GBP 164,900).
Cops believe Rimes Paulo met Marcelo at parties. Marcelo lived alone and had also started transitioning to life as a woman.
In May 2021, Rimes Paulo reportedly moved into his home, ostensibly to take care of him as he recovered from plastic surgery on his face.
But police believe she killed him by giving him an overdose of medicine. She then allegedly put her plan to assume his identity and seize his assets into action.
Cops say she called her friend Ronaldo Bertolini to help dispose of Marcelo’s body.
The two rented a plot of land in Campo Limpo Paulista, also in Sao Paulo state, where they allegedly burnt his corpse.
They then dumped his charred remains on the SP-354 state highway.
According to investigators, Rimes Paulo then started to collect rent from the properties Marcelo owned, as well as a monthly allowance from his aunt.
She also rented his home and sold his car with a fraudulent power of attorney.
Cops said she would pass herself off as Marcelo and explain that she had transitioned but had not yet changed her sex on her documents.
The scam was only discovered in April this year when a bank manager, who knew Marcelo, suspected something was wrong and called police.
Cops also said that in addition to wanting his money, Rimes Paulo did not want Marcelo to transition and “become more beautiful than her”.
Police spokesman Cristiano Sacrini said: “Maryana felt a lot of resentment because she believed that after gender transition surgery, Marcelo would be a more attractive woman, more beautiful than herself.”
Rimes Paulo is accused of aggravated murder, concealment of a corpse, embezzlement, identity theft and falsification of documents.
Bertolini is accused of the same offences and is being hunted by police.
