A grandfather has confessed to police how he dumped his 22-year-old daughter’s newborn baby in a dumpster bin.

Horrified firefighters in Belas, Portugal, found the tot’s body in the first minutes of 26th June after a frantic search.

Investigators do not know whether the infant was alive or dead when it was tossed into the rubbish bin.

The drama emerged when the baby’s mother called paramedics while suffering from heavy bleeding after the birth.

She was given first aid before being taken to a hospital in nearby Amadora, where she is still receiving treatment.

Despite clear signs of having gone through labour, she denied having a baby to suspicious medics.

When the infant was finally found, a man – said to be the tot’s grandfather – confessed to throwing the newborn in the rubbish.

The child is believed to have been born around one month prematurely. Its sex was not revealed.

Police are now investigating the case, including whether the baby was dead or alive when it was born.
