She is suddenly hit from behind by a car, which carries her down the road for several yards.

Local media reported that she later died of multiple injuries at the Taksim First Aid Hospital.

Police arrested the driver of the car, Hakan Akcelik, who is accused of causing death by negligence.

He reportedly said in his statement to the police: “All of a sudden she pulled out in front of me. I couldn’t stop.”

It is not clear if Akcelik was breaking the speed limit at the time.

The increase in e-scooter use on roads in Turkish cities has seen a corresponding uptick in patients admitted to hospital for injuries sustained in road accidents.

Dr Semih Baghaki of the Cerrahpasa Faculty of Medicine at Istanbul University told local media: “Injuries occur mostly in the head or neck.

“There is no mirror to control left and right, no cage to protect the body.”

Since 14th April last year, it has been prohibited to drive more than two e-scooters side-by-side in the lane of a road, make reckless movements, park disruptively, be more than one person on an e-scooter, or carry non-personal items on the vehicle.
