This is the impressive moment an off-duty cop sees a supermarket robbery in progress and swiftly neutralises the knifeman and wrestles him to the ground with minimal fuss.

The Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalan police) officer, name not reported, was filmed saving the day at a supermarket he frequents in the municipality of Mataro in Barcelona Province in the Spanish region of Catalonia.

According to the news site 20 Minutos, the 47-year-old suspect threatened a supermarket cashier with a knife and intended to rob the till.

However, he did not reckon on a cop popping into his local store on his day off.

Using all his police training, the off-duty officer promptly neutralised the suspect and disarmed him of the knife with minimal resistance.

He then restrained the suspect until officers arrived on the scene to take him away.

In the footage, the hooded suspect is seen approaching the cashier and apparently threatening him to open the till.

A balding man enters the frame and notices what is going on. He walks past the barrier and approaches the suspect from behind.

Using his arms, the cop seizes the knifeman under his armpits and grips his hands behind the suspect’s neck, using his body weight to force him to the floor with minimal struggle.

While lying on top of the suspect on the floor, the off-duty officer is able to swipe the knife out of the way while waiting for reinforcements to arrive.

The suspect is then seen being cuffed and led away as the video ends.
