These images show how a 1.5-inch rusty nail was removed from a carpenter’s eye after it became lodged there during a work accident reportedly involving a nail gun.

The successful operation to remove the metal object from the 21-year-old worker’s eye took place in Manama, the capital of Bahrain, in the Middle East.

An X-ray of the patient’s head shows how the nail had become embedded in the outer layer of the man’s eye.

The Bahrain Defence Force Military Hospital (BDF) that shared images of the operation released a statement in which it said that a team of medical experts led by Dr Ghada Al-Binali had removed the 4-centimetre (1.57-inch), partially rusted object, from the unnamed worker’s eye.

The operation reportedly took about one hour and according to Dr Al-Binali, head consultant ophthalmologist at the BDF Eye Clinic, it was a success and the patient is now regained full vision in their eye.

Dr Al-Binali performed the operation along with eye specialist Dr Muhammad Shabeer.

The nail had reportedly become lodged in the patient’s sclera, which is the white, outer layer of the eyeball, luckily missing the cornea.

It was also revealed that after the operation, the sclera was stitched up using surgical threads.

Dr Ghada said the case underlined why it was important to always wear protective goggles when doing carpentry work.
