A terrified baby needed 50 stitches to her face after a savage attack by a neighbour’s escaped pit bull.
Cosmetic surgeons had to reconstruct the infant’s face after her horrified parents rushed her to hospital in San Salvador de Jujuy, Argentina.
Local media said she needed 50 stitches to her cheek, the left corner of her lips, and her left lower eyelid after the attack earlier this month (August).
A photograph of the gruesome injuries shows how the pit bill apparently nearly managed to get the baby’s whole head in its jaws.
The girl had been playing on the patio of her family home when she was suddenly pounced on by the dog, which had escaped from a neighbour’s house.
Local media reported that the vicious attack only ended when the girl’s parents managed to pull her free.
They took the injured tot to a nearby hospital, where she received first aid.
Because of the seriousness of her injuries, she had to undergo cosmetic surgery at the Maternal and Child Hospital.
Medics said her recovery would take around 30 days.
The pit bull’s owner – a 28-year-old – was charged with negligent bodily injury and will appear in court this week.
The dog has been confiscated and may be put down.
