Texas Police Car Dashcam Catches Meteor Entering Earths Atmosphere In Greenish Flash Of Bright Light
This footage shows how a police car’s dashcam caught a meteor entering the Earth’s atmosphere over Texas in a greenish flash of bright light.
The incident happened in Travis County, which is located in south-central Texas, around the city of Austin, in the southern United States, with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) showing the footage online on Friday, 25th February.
The TCSO said: “A meteor caught on the dash cam! How cool is THAT?!” (sic)
The footage was reportedly captured on a police vehicle camera while an unnamed sergeant was patrolling the streets in eastern Travis County on Thursday, 17th February.
All is quiet as the video starts, with only a couple of streetlights and some city lights lit up in the distance.
But then suddenly a greenish flash can be seen appearing in the night sky darting in and out behind some light clouds.
It then disappears from view as the footage ends.
Meteors often give off bright lights when entering the Earth’s atmosphere as they are burnt up by the friction that this process causes.
Very often, meteorites burn up pretty much completely, but occasionally meteorites can be found at the location of impact.
It is currently unclear if there were any debris from the meteor that hit the surface of the planet. It is also unclear where exactly the meteor landed and if the authorities are looking for any meteorites.
