This is the moment meteorologists film a polar bear climbing onto a nearby roof in Russia.

The clip was filmed at the meteorological station on Golomyanny Island in the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago in Russia’s high Arctic.

The researchers recording the video clip can be heard joking that while some homeowners have to contend with cats crawling on top of their roofs, they have to deal with slightly larger visitors.

The footage was uploaded to Russian social media channel VK on 13th March and has since been viewed nearly 34,000 times.

Netizen Anna Semyonova commented: “In this village, children are probably told that babies are brought not by a stork, but by a polar bear.”

Daily mean temperatures in March on Golomyanny Island hover around minus 20 degrees centigrade (−3.8°F).

In addition to polar bears, collared lemmings, Arctic foxes, wolves, ermines, walruses, Arctic hares and reindeer can be found to varying degrees of frequency in the remote archipelago.

The group of islands has no permanent inhabitants. However, the meteorological station on Golomyanny Island, established in 1954, maintains a small team of around six visiting researchers.

The island last hit headlines when a British explorer became stranded there after a helicopter carrying her and five others crashed nearby in February 2018. Luckily, everyone survived the incident.
