A couple drowned in a terrifying crash when their speeding car flew off the road and landed in a river in Turkey.

Durmus Tunc, 41, and Merve Onder, 25, died after their car fell into a creek. Police later determined that the car had been going at an excessive speed.

The incident took place in the Ciftlik Mahallesi area of Mugla province, in south-western Turkey, on Thursday, 9th August, according to local media.

The two victims were reportedly on their way to Kabatas Beach, which is popular with tourists, when Tunc lost control of the vehicle.

Police and medical crews later retrieved the bodies of the pair from the river and pronounced them dead.

Both Tunc and Onder were taken to the Mugla Forensic Medicine Institute for autopsy.

The autopsies revealed that Tunc died of drowning and police believe he had been over the speed limit. The authorities concluded that the vehicle had veered off the road and fallen directly into the water and that they had drowned.

Merve’s body was then taken to her relatives in the city of Fethiye where she was buried, while Tunc’s funeral took place in the city of Denizli.
