A grief-stricken security guard has shot a heart doctor he blamed for his mother’s death before turning the gun on himself at a hospital in Turkey.
Attacker Haci Mehmet Akcay, 39, killed himself after shooting 47-year-old medic Ekrem Karakaya dead, say police investigating the killings in Konya.
Ackay blamed the cardiac specialists for his 57-year-old mother Keziban Akcay’s death last month, according to local reports.
She is said to have died after medics carried out a coronary angiogram X-ray.
The incident took place at Konya City Hospital in the Turkish province of Konya on 6th July.
Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said: “A security guard from Konya Yunak District State Hospital shot a physician at Konya City Hospital and took his life.
“He also died in the incident. Judicial authorities are continuing their investigations into this horrifying criminal act.”
The police said the weapon used in the attack was registered to the security guard.
Following an autopsy, Dr Karakaya’s body was handed over to his family for burial. The cardiologist leaves behind a wife and two children.
Dr Karakaya’s killing sparked outrage in Turkey and thousands of healthcare workers are calling for an “indefinite strike.”
A two-day strike was called by healthcare unions and the Turkish Medical Association.
But workers were outraged by a government gagging order banning the reporting of Dr Karakaya’s murder case and have called for tougher industrial action.
The investigation continues.
