How US Army Astronaut Performs Exercises In Zero Gravity To Keep Fit

This is how US Army astronaut Colonel Drew Morgan carries out exercises in zero gravity to keep fit while serving in space.

Colonel Morgan carried out an Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) in zero gravity while serving in the US Army’s Space and Missile Defence Command (USASMDC).

The footage shows Colonel Morgan, who was selected by NASA in 2013, performing dead-lifts with special equipment to replication lifting barbells in zero gravity while serving on the International Space Station (ISS).

In order to pass the combat fitness test, candidates must achieve a three-repetition max of 140 lbs or higher.

The serviceman also carries out a two-mile run by securing himself to a treadmill and then completing the run in the allotted time.

To perform hand release push-ups, Colonel Morgan anchors his feet and grips a bar, while leg tucks are carried out by holding onto a bar and using zero gravity to position himself upside down to do leg squats.

A standing power throw appears easier in space than on solid ground and the serviceman simply throws a ball behind his head and watches as it floats to the far end of the spacecraft.

Colonel Morgan recently served as flight engineer on the ISS for Expeditions 60, 61 and 62.

The US Army shared the video on social media with the message: “Colonel Drew Morgan conducts the ACFT in space.

“The Army Mission – our purpose – remains constant: To deploy, fight and win our nation’s wars by providing ready, prompt and sustained land dominance by Army forces across the full spectrum of conflict as part of the joint force.”

Established in 1997, USASMDC is an Army Service Component Command (ASCC) of the United States Army.
