Russian MoD Announces All Foreign Military Forces Have Now Left Kazakhstan

The Russian Ministry of Defence has announced that all military personnel from the CSTO “peacekeeping” mission sent to Kazakhstan have now left the country.

The Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) said in a statement released via its Department of Information and Mass Communication: “All peacekeepers, military equipment and weapons from the contingent of the Collective Peacekeeping Forces of the CSTO, which performed the tasks of protecting socially significant facilities in the Republic of Kazakhstan, have returned home.”

The Russian MoD said that four military aircraft had landed at the Chkalovsky airfield outside of Moscow, bringing the operation to a close. They said: “The last four aircraft of the military transport aviation of the Russian Aerospace Forces have landed at the Chkalovsky airfield near Moscow. They have also been visited by the command of the Russian peacekeeping contingent headed by Colonel-General Andrei Serdyukov.”

The Russian MoD said that troops from Armenia, Belarus, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan had all returned home as well. They said: “Earlier, the peacekeeping contingents of the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Belarus, and the Republic of Tajikistan returned home by planes of the military transport aviation of the Russian Aerospace Forces. Peacekeepers from the Kyrgyz Republic returned home, having marched as part of a column with standard equipment and weapons.”

The Russian MoD added: “In total, in the period from January 6 to January 19, 2022, 212 flights were made by aircraft of the military transport aviation of the Russian Aerospace Forces to transfer the peacekeeping contingent and return home.

“More than 20 flights of military transport aviation of the Russian Aerospace Forces transported over 2,200 Russian and foreign citizens to the Russian Federation from the Republic of Kazakhstan.”

Other images had previously shown other Russian soldiers being given a hero’s welcome as they returned home after being deployed to Kazakhstan.

The Song and Dance Ensemble of the Airborne Troops congratulated the Russian peacekeepers by performing for them on the airfield tarmac at the Chkalovsky airfield near the Russian capital Moscow.

The soldiers were also reportedly given bread and salt, which is a tradition in Russia, as well as in numerous other countries, for returning soldiers.

The Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) said in a statement obtained by Newsflash that the images show the “solemn meeting of Russian paratroopers who performed tasks as part of the CSTO collective peacekeeping forces in Kazakhstan”.

The images were shared online by the Russian MoD, which said: “The welcoming ceremony for Russian paratroopers who performed assigned tasks as part of the CSTO collective peacekeeping forces in the Republic of Kazakhstan took place at the Chkalovsky airfield near Moscow.”

The Russian government appeared to have spared no expense and welcomed the troops home with great pomp and circumstance.

The Russian MoD said: “During the honouring of the military personnel, representatives of the command of the Airborne Forces, the clergy, the leadership of the city of Kubinka, members of the Yunarmiya, members of the families of the arrived paratroopers-peacekeepers congratulated them on the successful completion of their tasks and thanked them for their highest professionalism.”

The authorities added that the soldiers were presented with bread and salt upon their arrival, which is a tradition in many Eastern countries. The MoD said: “According to tradition, arriving units were greeted with bread and salt.”

The Russian MoD also said that the Song and Dance Ensemble of the Airborne Troops congratulated the Russian peacekeepers by singing and performing for them.

The Russian state-owned news agency TASS said the images showed “Russian paratroopers from the CSTO forces returning to their homeland after completing the task of protecting socially significant facilities in Kazakhstan”.

Approximately 12,000 people have reportedly been arrested in Kazakhstan for their alleged participation in anti-government protests, which reportedly began in reaction to a fuel price hike.

The protests then spiralled out of control and turned into riots that involved looting and what the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev labelled an attempted coup d’etat. The violence was reportedly particularly pronounced in the former capital Almaty, leading the president to request help from the CSTO.

The CSTO, which stands for ‘Collective Security Treaty Organization’, is an intergovernmental military alliance in Eurasia that consists of select post-Soviet states, including Russia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
