A teenage athlete tragically died when she was hit by a truck at a roller skiing competition.

Cross-country roller skier Hana Mazi Jamnik was hit by a truck near Jorpeland, Norway, on the morning of 11th August.

The 19-year-old was part of the Slovenian national team that had taken part in the Blinkfestivalen roller skiing competition in nearby Sandnes the previous weekend, said the International Ski Federation.

The team had stayed on in Norway to train, and the accident happened while Hana was taking part in a training session.

The injured teen was given first aid at the scene and rushed to the nearest hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries.

Police prosecutor Sveinung Andersen said the accident “happened in a small tunnel”.

He added: “Unfortunately her life could not be saved. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.”

The International Ski Federation said Hana came 12th in the 5km at the Junior World Championships in Vuokatti, Finland, last year.

She was also named Junior World Champion in the 10km Interval Start at the Rollerski World Championships in Val di Fiemme, Italy, in the summer and won a silver medal three days later.

The Slovenian national team said: “You will always be in our thoughts. We will miss you.”

And her fellow national team athlete and partner Anze Gros, 20, said in a social media post: “You always took care of everyone around you and always brought positive energy…”

He added: “We planned our lives and wanted to be together until the end.”
