The Best Lego Designs
Although they are toys, Legos inspire amazing creations. LEGO artists make use of the small plastic bricks to create everything from architecture to robots. Even the engineers at the company develop new elements to allow builders to construct more complex models. Erik Varszegi is a Master Builder at the Lego Group, Billund, Denmark. He has designed an entirely new feature for this year’s model, the curved slope. It allows Lego users to create more slanted forms while still adhering to the company’s strict colour palette. The slopes can also be used to create a more dynamic shape like a curving staircase.
While some Lego designs are the creations of professional designers, others are the result of the wildly popular Lego Ideas set-design program. The Ideas line gives anyone the chance to create a set and get it made, offering fame and a percent of sales to designers who can convince 10,000 of their peers that their design deserves to be made into a production. It’s not surprising that the more extravagant and impressive sets typically garner the most popularity — particularly when they contain iconic scenes or characters from TV shows, movies or even real life.
Two space icons are among the most impressive Lego models that are available: the NASA shuttle Discovery and the Hubble Telescope model. Each comes with plaques of display and a small Lego model of the scientist who designed the telescope. Other impressive models are the framed rainbow, steampunk dragon as well as a replica of the Palace of Westminster.
