“Officers responded to 24th and P Street at 10:02 a.m. Sunday to check the well-being of a woman, later identified as Shakespeare, who had given birth on a sidewalk, then abandoned the baby.

“Officers located the baby boy, and Omaha Fire Department Medics transported him to the Nebraska Medical Center after being exposed to cold temperatures.”

According to the police, the baby boy was exposed to 15-degree temperatures for around five minutes before being rushed to the Nebraska Medical Center in a serious condition.

Omaha Police Department said: “Officers then located Shakespeare. Medics also transported her to the Nebraska Medical Center. Both Shakespeare and the baby boy are expected to survive the cold exposure.”

The Omaha Police Department continued: “After consulting with the Douglas County Attorney’s Office, officers booked Shakespeare at Douglas County Corrections today after she was released from the hospital.”

Eyewitness Latrell Crane told KETV the following day: “Yesterday was wrong. She came up over here, right? She was cold. She was in pain. She was crying and I know her.

“I come over and then the baby is on the sidewalk. Like, just in the fetal position, not breathing… Her umbilical cord still attached. And then, it’s just like, it’s just my instinct because I have two kids in my own, right? I grabbed that umbilical cord and wrapped it around my hand.”

Crane said the mother walked away with a blanket wrapped around her waist while she and a stranger cared for the newborn on the pavement.

The investigation continues.
