Bahrain Court Jails Man For 3 Years For Breaking COVID Quarantine

A Bahraini court has jailed a foreign worker for three years and ordered his deportation afterwards for breaking COVID-19 quarantine.

The defendant, name and nationality not disclosed, violated a compulsory home isolation order and was caught in public in the Bahraini capital Manama while still wearing his electronic tracker wristband.

The man was sentenced to three years in prison with a fine of BHD 5,000 (GBP 9,420). He will also be deported back to his home country after finishing his jail term.

The man was convicted of violating home quarantine rules to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office was informed of a social media video showing the man visiting a restaurant in Manama while still wearing an electronic tracker wristband.

The Public Health Directorate confirmed that the man had violated a stay-at-home order and launched criminal proceedings against him.

After checking the man’s health condition, prosecutors questioned him and referred him to court for an urgent trial.

The defendant pleaded guilty allowing the Lower Criminal Court to hand down its verdict.
