Boston Port Welcomes Its Biggest Ever Cargo Ship After USD-850-Million Modernisation Project

The Port of Boston has welcomed its biggest ever cargo ship after spending USD 850 million on a project to modernise its infrastructure, as can be seen in this footage.

The arrival of the Ever Fortune vessel in the Port of Boston, in the north-eastern US state of Massachusetts, has reportedly been hailed as the start of a “new chapter” for the city as it struggles to compete with an increasing number of ports in the United States that can welcome increasingly large container ships.

The images show the large vessel, which measures three football fields in length and measures approximately 50 metres (164 feet) across, laden with containers and making its way into Boston Port under the supervision of smaller vessels, including one operated by the Massachusetts State Police.

The vessel, which was built in 2020, flies under the flag of Hong Kong. Its purpose is to connect Boston with various sports in East Asia. It will transit between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans via the Panama Canal, the Massachusetts Port Authority said.

The Massachusetts Port Authority has undertaken an USD-850-million (GBP-625-million) project so that the port can welcome bigger ships. This reportedly included making the shipping channel deeper by about 2 metres (7 feet).

The Massachusetts State Police shared the footage of the vessel making its way into Boston Port and said: “Yesterday [ed. Sunday, 16th January] the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing was overhead while the Port of Boston welcomed its largest cargo ship ever, the Ever Fortune.

“This comes after a monumental project to deepen the shipping channel in Boston Harbor to allow for safe passage of this class of ship. Attached is footage taken from Air 4. Also in the video are members of the State Police Marine Unit on scene in Marine 44.”
