Columbia Police Officer Rescues Disabled Woman From Burning Flames

A police officer’s bodycam has caught the moment the dramatic rescue of a disabled woman trapped inside a burning house following the explosion of oxygen canisters.

Corporal Allan Ervin from the US state of Tennessee rushed out of his vehicle to help the disabled lady named April Chumley, 37, whose home at 102 Rinks Circle caught fire in the city of Columbia on the Friday morning of the 9 July.

Firebrigade crews that received the alarm call reported the incident occurred because of oxygen tanks which were stored inside the house, that exploded due to unknown reasons.

The video shows how the 37-year-old woman’s parents managed to get outside before the explosion, while April who is motionless and non-communicative remained lying near the front door.

Immediately after, April’s father and a neighbor who rushed to the burning home to help tried to get the woman out, when Ervin came and took the matter into his own hands by rescuing her.

Paramedics instantly took the injured woman to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in the city of Nashville.

According to local media she is still in critical but stable condition due to severe burns and smoke inhalation.

Ervin, on the other hand, was not hurt during the rescue operation, while April’s parents who were also admitted to the hospital were released shortly after.

The neighbour who was not named by local media explained what happened, saying: “He finally let go of his walker and crawled to the front door and I saw a blanket with someone’s hands, and then I reached for the blanket and boom, that’s when the first explosion happened, and the cop finally comes and goes get away from the house.”

The police reported that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
