This is the moment a Chinese firefighter rescues two dogs that spent all night trapped on a small island in the middle of a city river.

The rescue was filmed in the Chinese megacity of Chongqing this week and the footage has been widely shared on the social network Douyin, also known as TikTok.

It is unclear how the two dogs ended up in the river, however, the banks were too steep for them to escape and they remained trapped on the small island for the whole night, according to reports.

In the footage, the two dogs greet the firefighter warmly after he goes down the ladder and takes one of the pooches in his arms.

The other dog tries to walk up the ladder while the firefighter carries its pal to the top, but decides to wait at the bottom instead.

In the second clip, the firefighter is seen returning for the second dog and bringing it to safety at street level.

According to local media, the two dogs were returned to their owner who thanked firefighters for their rescue efforts.
