The driver of the car that exploded while being filled with gas at a petrol station in Brazil has died in hospital.

Mario Magalhaes da Penha, 67, was blown off his feet in the massive blast at the filling station in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday, 26th July.

Shocking CCTV footage shows how Mario had just opened the boot of his car while it was being loaded with compressed natural gas when the explosion took place.

The footage shows how he was knocked backwards by the blast, which destroyed the vehicle and left the elderly man motionless on the forecourt.

The video shows how he was left covered in blood and his clothes were shredded to pieces by the blast.

Mario was taken to Salgado Filho Municipal Hospital following the accident, but local media are now reporting that he died in the early hours of Wednesday.

Earlier reports said he had undergone surgery shortly after his admission to the health facility and he had remained in a serious condition.

Workers at the petrol station said the explosion was caused by the car’s rusted gas tank.

A female passerby was also injured in the blast and was taken to Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital. She was discharged on the same day, it has now emerged.

It is still unclear if police will investigate the incident.
