Injured Sun Bear Filmed Wandering Aimlessly After Habitat Destroyed By Logging
This is the moment a sun bear with a leg injury wanders aimlessly after its habitat was destroyed by logging.
The incident was filmed in Kuala Lipis in the Malaysian state of Pahang, and the footage was shared on Facebook by the Malaysia Animal Association.
The association wrote: “A sun bear with a leg injury has lost its way after its habitat was destroyed by logging. We have been informed that the location is in Kuala Lipis, Pahang, where large-scale logging is being carried out. It is not for development purposes, but the land is left barren without reforestation, causing wild animals to appear and roam aimlessly.”
The animal welfare group said Malaysia used to be celebrated for its rich biodiversity and rainforests, but natural areas are being destroyed at a rapid rate.
The Malaysia Animal Association said: “The Pahang State Government needs to change immediately to prevent more deforestation from happening every month.
“Deforestation and logging will not only destroy wildlife habitats but will invite disasters to humans such as major floods, greenhouse effects, oxygen depletion, and global warming.”
They added: “Our country will also be recorded as a nation that destroys nature.”
According to the Red List of threatened animals of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), sun bears (Helarctos malayanus) are considered ‘vulnerable’.
