Three Day Stand Off Between Man With AR-15 Assault Rifle And Cops Ending With His Death In Burning Home

This footage released by the police shows the three-day stand-off that took place between a man armed with an AR-15 assault rifle and explosives and police officers shortly before he died in his burning home.

The incident took place in the city of LaGrange, which is located in the US state of Georgia, between 15th and 17th November but the images and information were only released by the police on Friday, 10th December.

Police named the suspect as Brian Jessee, 39, and said that they spent six hours negotiating with him on the first day in a bid to have him release his two children, who have not been named, and who were initially inside the residence at the time of the stand-off.

It is unclear if the police eventually managed to negotiate the release of the children but they did say that the minors were at some point outside the residence and were taken into care by the authorities.

The police said that on 16th November, they secured “arrest warrants for six counts of felony Terroristic Threats, one count of Cruelty to a Child in the Second Degree, and one count of Felony Obstruction.” (sic)

They added: “Based on additional verified information that Jessee had multiple firearms and explosives inside the residence, an immediate operation plan was developed to evacuate the neighborhood.”

The police said that they began evacuating the neighbourhood at 3 PM on 16th November. During the evacuation process, the suspect was seen walking in the neighbourhood while carrying an AR-15 assault rifle.

The AR-15 assault rifle has become nearly synonymous in the USA over the years with school shootings and active shooter incidents.

As can be seen in the footage, the police repeatedly ask the suspect to surrender but he does not listen to them.

The police said: “Jessee fired multiple rounds from that rifle placing officers and residents in imminent danger.”

As the incident escalated, the local LaGrange police called in backup from “the Peachtree City Police Department, Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, Fulton County Police Department, Newnan Police Department, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigations Explosives Division.”

The police also call firefighters and emergency responders to the scene.

The police said that they made “multiple attempts to communicate with Jessee in order to safely resolve the incident, but were met with additional and continuous gunfire” over the next 16 hours.

The cops said that the suspect then retreated into the home and barricaded himself inside it.

The authorities tried to breach various areas of the residence, using armoured vehicles, but they were met with gunfire. The footage also appears to show the suspect attempting to use explosives against one of the armoured vehicles.

The police added: “Officers deployed CS gas and smoke in an effort to minimize the risk of danger to Jessee and the officers as they attempted to take Jessee into custody during the early morning hours of November 17, 2021.

“When provided with a tactical opportunity, Lagrange Police Officers exchanged gunfire with Jessee. After that exchange, no further shots were fired. At approximately 7:35 a.m., officers observed a small fire inside the garage of the residence.”

The footage shows the residence on fire and the cops said that it appeared that a significant quantity of ammunition was going off in the blaze.

The fire department intervened and put out the fire. The police said that Jessee’s remains were found inside the home. They said that they have been taken for autopsy.

The police said that the Georgia Bureau of Investigations is conducting an enquiry into the incident because it involved an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and the police.

The investigation is ongoing.
