Three Kids Lived Alone In Abandoned Texas Home With Skeletal Remains Of Child For A Year

Three children have been rescued in Texas after they were found living alone in an abandoned home along with the skeletal remains of their nine-year-old brother.

The three rescued children may have been living alone in the apartment for approximately a year with no adult, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, who said that the body of a “deceased juvenile” had been recovered.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said that the incident, which took place at 3535 Green Crest, in west Harris County, on the outskirts of the city of Houston in the southern US state of Texas, was “heartbreaking”.

The sheriff said that the remains of the juvenile had been left in the apartment for an “extended period of time”.

Sheriff Gonzalez held a press conference for the media, the footage of which was shared online by the sheriff’s office on Sunday evening (24th October).

He said that it was a “very horrific situation” and that it was “very tragic”. He said: “I have been in this business for a long time and I have never heard of a scenario like this. It caught me by surprise.”

He added that they were found in an apartment unit where the three children were left abandoned. Police had been called to the scene for a welfare check but it is currently unclear who placed the call.

The sheriff stated that the children, all three of them boys, who have been rescued, are 15, 10 and 7 years old, adding that they had also recovered the “skeletal remains of what appears to be a juvenile.”

He said that it is currently unclear when the deceased juvenile died and that forensic investigators were on the scene.

Sheriff Gonzalez, who said that all of his staff had been deeply affected by the gruesome discovery, added that they were currently working to identify the deceased child’s next of kin in a bid to determine “how it got to this point”. They are also working to determine who the legal guardian may be for the three children who have been rescued.

It is also unclear how the three children managed to feed themselves.

Homicide investigators along with Child Protective Services and child abuse specialists are investigating the case. Sheriff Gonzalez said that there would be a “follow-up investigation involving multiple agencies because we also have juveniles involved.”
