Woman Has Large Twig Removed From Eye After Falling Off E-Bike
A Chinese woman has had a 5.5-centimetre long twig removed her face after it penetrated her lower eyelid and ended up in her nasal cavity when she fell off her e-bike.
Ms Li, aged 66, from the city of Yangzhou in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu, was riding her electric bike when she fell off near a bus stop and the twig penetrated her lower eyelid at around 12.40pm on 1st June.
She recounted: “It was terribly painful, and bleeding a lot. I fought the pain and called my children.”
Ms Li’s family took her to the Affiliated Hospital of Yangzhou University Medical Academy for treatment.
Doctor Liu Wei, the deputy chief physician of the Department of Ophthalmology, found that a 5.5-centimetre long twig had penetrated the patient’s face as a result of the accident.
The doctor said a small part was visible outside, but most of the foreign object had penetrated into the woman’s nasal cavity narrowly missing going on into her brain.
To avoid infection, the doctor decided to remove the twig immediately.
Doctor Liu Wei said: “We made an incision on the lower eyelid to separate the foreign body, separate the surrounding tissue, and try to use vascular forceps to extract the twig.”
After the operation, Ms Li told reporters that she feared she would lose the sight in her affected eye before being sent to hospital, adding that since the surgery the vision in the eye is slowly coming back to normal.
The doctor reminded residents to always protect their eyes with goggles or eyewear when carrying out certain jobs or potentially risky tasks.
