This is the moment manhole covers fly in the air while a council worker paints lines on the pavement after an explosion in the sewer.

The incident took place in the city of Qingyuan in the south-eastern Chinese province of Guangdong on 17th April.

According to the news site Baidu, an explosion caused by a blockage took place in the underground sewer that lifted up the manhole covers on street level.

The incident took place coincidentally at the same time council workers were painting lines on the pavement.

According to eyewitnesses, police officers and firefighters arrived on the scene and carried out an inspection, soon finding the blockage and cause of the explosion.

The built-up gas was ignited when the council worker passed over a manhole with the motorised equipment.

Meanwhile, local residents have reportedly been complaining about smelly sewage and blocked drains for some time.

In the footage, a worker is seen painting yellow lines on the pavement as two men look on.

The worker passes the motorised equipment over a manhole cover and smoke appears from the edges.

The cover then lifts as other nearby manhole covers fly in the air, sending the two men running.
