This picture shows a young woman veterinary student lying on the cold floor while desperately ill from COVID-19 because there are no beds available for her in the hospital.

Lara Arreguiz, who was just 22, started to develop symptoms on 13th May and passed away in hospital in the Argentine city of Santa Fe on 21st May.

Her symptoms started out as a cough but in just a few days she had developed shortness of breath. She got tested and found out she had not just COVID-19 but double pneumonia.

There were no available beds in or around the city, however, and when she was admitted to hospital on 17th May, it was at full occupancy and she was only able to lie on the cold, hard floor, where she was photographed, to rest.

A member of staff eventually passed by and took her to receive supplementary oxygen. A bed was finally found for her at another hospital on the same night and she was transferred there.

Her condition worsened and she was admitted to intensive care, where she was intubated, on 20th May.

She passed away after suffering three cardiac arrests in the early hours of the following morning.

Lara lived in the Argentine city of Esperanza and was a veterinary science student.

She was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 10 and was insulin dependent, placing her in an at-risk group from COVID-19.

According to Worldometer, Argentina currently has 354,472 active COVID-19 cases and is the country with the fifth-highest number of active cases in the world, after the USA, India, Brazil and Iran, which are all more populated.

The South American country is currently going through its highest peak since the pandemic began.
