This is the moment a motorist drives up to a US cop doing paperwork in a patrol car and reportedly shoots at him, prompting a dramatic car chase.

The officer-involved shooting took place in the township of Decatur in Macon County in the US state of Illinois at around 10.45pm on 18th June .

The Decatur Police Department (DPD) said: “Marcus Boykin was arrested by DPD for numerous criminal offenses after he fired a handgun at a Decatur Police Officer, and then led officers on a lengthy vehicle pursuit.

“During the pursuit, Boykin continued to possess the handgun while waiving it around and pointing the handgun at officers.”

During the car chase, an officer fired his weapon at Boykin, 29, when he reportedly pointed his gun at him a second time.

The police released footage of the incident to “remain transparent with the public”.

In the footage, Boykin approaches the stationary patrol car in a white vehicle before passing the driver’s window and allegedly shooting at the cop doing paperwork.

The police explained: “The act of Boykin firing the weapon is not captured on video due to the direction of the dash camera, but Boykin can be seen approaching the officer while leaning out of the driver’s window as he neared the officer.

“The video next shows dash camera footage and body-worn camera footage, both from the same officer, to show the officer discharging their weapon. The dash camera footage shows Boykin turn around inside of the vehicle and point the handgun directly towards the officer.”

Boykin was taken into custody without further incident. No one was injured during the gunfire and a pistol was recovered from the suspect, according to the police.

Meanwhile, the local Attorney General’s Office has ruled the use of force by the cop as justified.

Boykin’s charges include the attempted murder of a police officer, aggravated assault of a police officer, possession of a weapon by a felon, aggravated fleeing and eluding police, and aggravated DUI (Driving under the influence).
